Applied Research: Bioeconomy, Renewable Carbon & Climate Change

New Zealand

Introduction

New Zealand’s bioeconomy and electrification strategies focus on leveraging unique natural resources and abundant renewable energy to phase out fossil fuels, bolster national energy security, and drive high-value economic growth.

New Zealand's Bioeconomy

The bioeconomy framework prioritises converting biological resources into sustainable products and high-value exports. Centred around the Bioeconomy Science Institute and a $42.8 million Biodiscovery Platform, the strategy accelerates the commercialisation of natural pharmaceuticals, bioplastics, and cosmetics derived from indigenous flora. Additionally, the Wood Energy Strategy and biogas initiatives utilise extensive forestry residues to replace coal boilers and develop local pathways for sustainable aviation fuels.

Electrification in New Zealand

The Electrify NZ work programme aims to double renewable energy generation by 2050. It eliminates regulatory hurdles by fast-tracking resource consents for wind, solar, and grid infrastructure to under one year. Complementing these large-scale grid expansions, public advocacy from groups like Rewiring Aotearoa pushes for widespread consumer electrification—promoting low-interest loans for rooftop solar, home heat pumps, and electric vehicles—to permanently insulate households from volatile international fossil fuel prices.
